We are young research group developing methods related to molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecules.
The position is available in the group of Dr. Jochen Hub, on the topic of molecular dynamics simulations of protein-X-ray interactions. The project is embedded in the Collaborative Research Center 860 on Dynamics of Macromolecular Assemblies. The PhD studies can be conducted within the local GGNB Graduate School, providing an stimulating environment for PhD candidate.

Scientific background:
Wide-angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) is an emerging experimental technique which can provide structural information about biomolecules (proteins, DNA, RNA) in solution and, thus, under physiological conditions. In addition, such methods even yield time-resolved insight into conformation transitions of biomolecules, and could therefore in principle observe these intriguing molecular machines "in action".
So far, the interpretation of (time-resolved) WAXS spectra is difficult and therefore restricts a wider application of the method. We aim to change this unsatisfactory situation using molecular dynamics simulations, carried out on state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities, with the aim to derive atomistic interpretations of WAXS data. The WAXS spectra will be measured by colleagues in the same corridor, thus allowing very tight collaboration to experimentalists. The detailed direction of the project can also be decided together with the PhD candidate.
We seek:
We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented PhD student who is interested to work in a young and stimulating research environment. The applicant should have a degree in physics, chemistry, or a related subject. Experience in molecular dynamics, programming, or Linux/Unix-like environments is beneficial, but not required. Most important is a strong interest in molecular biophysics.
