The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI) is a newly created Cluster of
Excellence, funded by the German federal government. The Cluster is based on
the unique research environment in Hamburg, with a focus on promoting
interdisciplinary research activities between the Universität Hamburg and
its partners (DESY, EMBL, MPG, XFEL). In order to further strengthen the
scientific profile and expertise in the core research areas of the cluster,
the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging and the School of Mathematics,
Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for up to three

W3 Professorships
in the following subject areas, commencing on 1 July 2013.

Femtochemistry (Experimental) / ref.no. 2158/W3
The successful candidate will conduct research in state-of-the-art
femtochemistry. Using ultra-fast lasers and novel spectroscopic tools,
dynamical processes in molecular systems will be observed directly in the
time domain. A deep understanding of underlying chemical and physical
phenomena is required, together with demonstrated proficiency in combining
experiment and theory.

Biophysics (Experimental) / ref.no. 2159/W3
The successful candidate will conduct research in new directions at the
interface between physics and biology, and in the general areas of protein
dynamics or cell systems, taking ad-vantage of new opportunities presented
by X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) and ultrafast-pulsed electron guns.
This will complement research in the CUI directed towards elucidating the
structure-function correlation of biological systems or in-situ imaging of
cells.

Chemistry of Nanoscopic Systems (Theory) / ref.no. 2160/W3
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of physical
and/or theoretical chemistry. Computational methods should be developed
and/or applied to study the properties and behavior of large molecular
systems, compounds and clusters. The work will comprise the modeling of
structure formation and ordering processes of complex nanoscopic systems and
it will complement within CUI the existing expertise of the faculty.

And for up to six W1 Professorships
in the following subject areas, commencing on 1 July 2013.

Ultrafast Quantum Physics with Engineered Light Fields / ref.no. JP 190
The successful candidate will conduct research into the dynamics of quantum
systems. The systems under study - atoms, molecules or surfaces – will be
stimulated and probed with non-standard electromagnetic fields such as
deep-UV, mid-infrared or terahertz pulses, or tempo-rally shaped laser
pulses. The research shall contribute to the understanding of the temporal
evolution of quantum systems on a femtosecond to picosecond time scale
and/or develop the means to control it.

Experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics, with a Focus on Quantum Optics
and Quantum Photonic Devices / ref.no. JP 191
The successful candidate will conduct research in the field of modern atomic
and molecular physics and quantum optics. We are particularly interested in
candidates with experience in quantum photonics devices and their dynamics.
Specific topics include, but are not limited to, quantum opto-mechanics,
light-matter entanglement and the condensation of quasiparticles.

Ultrafast Imaging of Biological and Chemical Systems / ref.no. JP 192
The successful candidate will conduct research in the scientific area of
atomically resolved structural dynamics of biological systems or systems of
chemical interest. A main area of interest is the use of ultrabright X-ray
and electron sources for structure determination of aperiodic systems,
single molecule tomography, and nanocrystallography. The candidate will be
expected to pursue a rigorous research program that takes advantage of these
unique sources and environment of the CUI to solve problems in which the new
methods in structure determination and/or structural dynamics provide new
insight in resolving structure-function correlations of biological systems.

Structural Biology of Membrane-Bound Proteins / ref.no. JP 193
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of
crystallization and structure analysis of membrane-bound proteins, with a
strong focus towards developing and applying methods of nanocrystallization
and sample preparation to perform time resolved studies at free-electron
laser (FEL) radiation sources. The candidate is expected to collaborate with
other groups in CUI applying novel X-ray or electron structural probes and
should launch new methods advancing the physics of phase separation and
membrane protein crystal growth in lipidic systems. Furthermore, the
research will be conducted in close cooperation with the UKE
(Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf). The candidate’s future research should
focus on structural studies of membrane- bound signalling complexes of
pathogens and host cells relevant in infectious diseases.

Ultrafast Structure Determination in Liquids / ref.no. JP 194
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of condensed
matter physics with an emphasis on “Ultrafast Structure Determination in
Liquids”. The candidate is expected to collaborate with other groups in CUI
and will take advantage of the new free-electron laser (FEL) and synchrotron
X-ray sources. The research activities might comprise the determination of
short- and medium-range (transient) correlations in liquids and glasses as
well as the study of nucleation and growth processes of nanostructures.

Investigation of Ultrafast Electronic Processes of Nanoscopic Systems with
Femtosecond Laser Spectroscopy / ref.no. JP 195
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of chemistry and/
or condensed matter physics with an emphasis on “ultrafast electronic
processes of nanoscopic systems with femtosecond laser spectroscopy”. The
candidate is expected to collaborate with other groups in the CUI and take
advantage of the new free-electron laser (FEL) and synchrotron X-ray
sources. Research activities might include the study of electron transfer
processes at interfaces and/or fast dynamics in correlated systems.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate research experience on an
international level as well as experience with externally funded projects.
The University places particular value on the quality of teaching. We
therefore request applicants provide details of both their teaching
experience and their future teaching objectives.
The University aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching
and explicitly encourages women to apply. Equally qualified female
applicants will receive preference in accordance with the Hamburg Higher
Education Act

Requirements:
Academic qualifications and further requirements as specified in §15 (W3
professorships) and in § 18 (W1 professorships) of Hamburg’s Higher
Education Act (HmbHG).
Severely disabled applicants will receive preference over equally qualified
non-disabled applicants.
