Dear All
I am looking for an introductory statistical text for a seminar group.
The group is doctoral students in a non-mathematical subject BUT the
expertise in the area in my experience is bi-modal. Some have little
grounding that allows them to make sense of statistics, others seem to
have a natural affinity and are capable of the most subtle thinking (I
have been advising for twenty odd years in this area). The staff
member in charge of this seminar group is one of the later.
Secondly a lot of their data is counts or categorical (normal binary
presence/absence). I would at least like a introductory text that
includes a two-way chi-squared and other tests appropriate for tables
and some non-parametric tests. The automatic assumption of normality
is rarely met so texts that jump straight to t-tests and such are not
really satisfactory.
I suspect that Dobson and Barnett "An Introduction to Generalized
Linear Models" would be a good follow up text but I would like
something to give a grounding before that.
