TORG are pleased to announce this week's Wednesday lunchtime seminar:
" Emissions from Asphalt Paving and Traffic Congestion at Road Works "
Speaker: Dr Yue Huang, Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, Liverpool John Moores University
Location: Cassie 2.32
Time/Date: 7th November 2012, 13:00 - 15:00
About the seminar:
The life cycle assessment (LCA) is being accepted by the road industry to measure the energy consumption and carbon footprint of its materials and laying processes. Traffic emissions due to road works are typically excluded from such studies. However as the traffic vehicles account for the majority of emissions from a road, contractors and road agencies are looking for road maintenance works that have the least overall environmental impact considering both the road work itself and the disrupted traffic. A previous case study investigated an asphalt pavement rehabilitation project in the UK, in which the micro-simulation program was used to model the traffic. The emissions from the road work and the traffic were compared. The additional emissions by the traffic during the road work were found to be significant, nonetheless there was severe limitation in the traffic modelling process.
The seminar will introduce the LCA and its use in asphalt paving, describe the development of a model for road construction. It outlines the current joint research undertaken by Newcastle and Nottingham University which have obtained construction and traffic data from county council and material supplier, and traffic management design from contractors. This research aims to investigate whether traffic management at road maintenance projects should be included in the life cycle analysis of such work, and what level of sophistication is appropriate. The traffic modelling, sensitivity to traffic management scenarios and sophistication of models will be presented by Newcastle researcher Fabio Galatioto.
About the presenter:
After graduating with BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering and an MSc in Pavement Engineering at Chang'an University in China, Yue completed a PhD at the Newcastle University in 2007. Yue moved to Liverpool John Moores University in 2012 as a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, from the University of Nottingham where he was employed as a Research Fellow working on a project to develop Life Cycle Assessment tools for transport infrastructure. His previous employers include Scott Wilson (now URS) where he undertook pavement engineering research and consultancy. Yue is a Charted Engineer and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.
Seminar Location:
Please join us on Wednesday 7/11/2012 between 13:00-15:00 in Room 2.32, Cassie Building, Claremont Road, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU.
The Cassie Building is building number 49 on the Campus Map and is about a 5-10 minute walk from Haymarket metro/bus interchange or Jesmond metro station, both of which are easily accessible from Newcastle Central station or Newcastle International Airport. Car parking in and around the University campus is limited, but Park and Ride options are available from seven metro stations within Newcastle - please see the Nexus website Metro Map for more details.
Further information:
The TORG seminars are intended to disseminate ongoing research and encourage detailed discussions of a diverse range of transport topics in an informal environment - for further information on a specific seminar, please contact Dr. Dilum Dissanayake ([log in to unmask]). The TORG seminars are part of a wider programme within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences all of which are free of charge and open for external guests to attend. Please let Miss Emma Simblett know if you wish to attend a TORG seminar to allow names of external guests to be noted. After the seminar, and where suitable content is available, we try to make the presentations available online, subject to our presenters giving their permission for us to do so.
We look forward to seeing you.
