One of my closest friends was a composition student of Carter's, and on two occasions I was at gatherings in his honor. He was a gentle presence. I also had a New Yorker's privilege of being at I think five premieres of his work, including one just after his hundredth birthday, when with a little help he made it up the stairs to the stage. Always demanding and surprising.
Among his work is a suite of short pieces for tympany. I saw them performed maybe twenty years ago by a young woman who became a blur of motion. Witty and exciting. What a mind that man had!
It's probably silly to be saddened by a death at 103, but I am.
