c
p.s. is there really i place called "Waterlooville"?
the Mind Boggles.
Yes. It's a village a few miles north of Portsmouth on the A3, the London
Road. I believe there was originally just a cross roads with a pub called
"The Heroes of Waterloo". Clearly it postdates the Napoleonic Wars. The
village that grew up round it was a sort of "new town" given the way
Hampshire was developing in the 19th C. The parish Church is dedicated to St
George.
The pronunciation matters. It is WaterlooVILLE. Ignorant persons (including
the BBC) sometimes call it WaterLOOville.
Brenda.
