Global Futures Special Event:
Ian Dawson in conversation with Marcus Harvey
Tuesday, 13 November 2012
4:00pm to 6:00pm
WSA Gallery (Ground Floor, Westside Building, WSA Campus)
Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton
To celebrate the publication of artist and WSA lecturer Ian Dawson’s book Making Contemporary Sculpture, WSA Global Futures invite you to a conversation between the author and the artist Marcus Harvey, Tuesday, 13 November 2012, 4:00pm to 6:00pm in the WSA Gallery (Westside Building, Ground Floor). The talk begins at 4:00pm, followed by a drinks reception and book signing.
Marcus Harvey became known for his infamous portrait of Myra Hindley, which came to prominence in the ‘Sensation’ exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997). Since then he has worked on large-scale work that operates between sculpture and painting. In 2009 he recreated a portrait of Margaret Thatcher out of 15,000 plaster cast items.
Harvey’s commentary on the construction of British social and cultural identity then extended into working with death masks ofAdmiral Nelson and Churchill in ceramics.
Harvey also founded Turps Banana a quarterly publication discussing both the theory and practice of painting written by practitioners.
In Making Contemporary Sculpture, Dawson interviews Harvey and 25 other artists about their practice. These artists include Keith Tyson, Fiona Banner, Sir Anthony Caro, Richard Wilson, and Cathy de Monchaux. It is a journey into the world of the contemporary artist, a document that helps describe what it is like to make some of the most exciting contemporary art of today. Copies of the book will be on sale in the gallery.
We hope you will join us for this exciting event!
