The complex process of reform and transformation in higher education in
Eastern Europe has created common challenges and transferable or
adaptable solutions which we would like to address. To this end, we
propose a symposium to be held at the coming EATAW Conference in
Budapest (27-29 June 2013). We hope the symposium will connect several
contributions so as to develop a coherent discussion on the special
conditions of academic writing in Eastern Europe and the current
challenges these countries are facing. While some projects may have
attempted to apply or adapt solutions from the US or western Europe,
others may have created home-grown approaches to the development of
writing in higher education which will be of interest to a wider
audience.
We interpret “Eastern Europe” to include all countries belonging of
the former communist/socialist region. The symposium will report on the
results of the LIDHUM project, involving universities from Ukraine,
Romania, Macedonia and Switzerland. We invite contributions from other
countries in the Central and Eastern European and former Soviet region
and projects dealing with their special situation.
Topics for the symposium include but are not limited to the following:
- specific writing practices and writing cultures
- development of writing programs and writing centers
- genres and genre practices with reference to Eastern Europe
- writing as part of the modernization of teaching and adaptation
to Bologna
- writing between national languages and English
