The goal of the MRC Epidemiology Unit is to study the genetic, developmental and environmental determinants of obesity, type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders and to contribute to the prevention of these disorders. The MRC Epidemiology Unit is based within the new Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) building in Cambridge on the Addenbrooke's site.

Are you interested in using and developing your statistical and programming skills to make a key contribution to research into the causes of obesity and diabetes? Are you interested in working with other statisticians, epidemiologists and geneticists in a dynamic and fast-moving research environment?
The MRC Epidemiology Unit has rich resources of genetics and lifestyle data from several large prospective observational studies. By contributing results from specific analyses of these datasets, the Unit is a lead player in many global research consortia whose aims are to understand how genes and lifestyle factors influence the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders.
Analysing these large and complex datasets requires an individual with exceptional skills in statistics and programming. The successful candidate will have an MSc in statistics, and some experience of using Stata to perform statistical analysis and write programs (ado files), working in either a Windows or Unix operating environment. The individual will have the aptitude to develop their skills to use software packages and programming languages which may be necessary for genetic analysis. We are also looking for someone with the ability to work as part of a team and communicate statistical concepts clearly to non-statisticians, to organise their own work to meet deadlines, and to adapt to changing priorities in this exciting research field.
