Having worked with the standards frameworks developed by the HEA, SEDA, the NMC and LLUK, I think I’m right in saying that it’s only the latter that have ever specified that they be met at a particular academic level, but even with LLUK (now LSIS) there was, and still is, choice for a university to validate their own awards across a range of levels – within the QAA rule that if the award is to be called `Post-Graduate…’ (as opposed to Professional Graduate) then it must have some master’s level credit in it.

Some history may or may not be useful. From memory:
In the early days of the SEDA teacher accreditation scheme, in the early 1990s, SEDA did not specify how long an accredited (recognised) course should last, or how many credits it should attract. However, over 50 or 60 such programmes, I think the norm became a PGCert, attracting 60 credits, and thus notionally 600 participant learning hours, which of course included much planning and teaching by the participant. (For the QAA a PGCert meant 60 credits)
When the ILTHE began to accredit (recognise) programmes, I think 60 credits was a requirement, certainly in the early days
I do not know what the Higher Education Academy currently says about credits or durations, or how any such requirements have changed over time
Where do standards lie? In the learning outcomes, the values, the underpinning knowledge? In the level of the programme? In the number of participant learning hours, and hence the number of credits? In the processes of the programme? In the assessment, which hopefully relates to the specified learning outcomes, values, knowledge? Somewhere else? Such programmes are hopefully both academic (scholarly) and professional. This can be an uneasy boundary

Apologies if this question may have been asked recently - there have been a few around PGCerts flying about.
We are revalidating our PG Cert in Learning & Teaching in HE at LJMU this year and I wondered if you could advise on the following two questions:
1. How many credits within your PGCerts are compulsory?
2. How long do your staff have to complete the programme?
Any responses would be much appreciated.
