Dear Colleague,
Have your say on mitochondria replacement
At the request of the Government, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has launched a public consultation on new, IVF-based, techniques designed to avoid mitochondrial disease.
UK researchers are working on these new medical techniques that could allow women to avoid passing on genetically inherited mitochondrial diseases to their children. As they involve modification of human embryos or eggs, they are at the cutting edge of science and ethics. The law would need to change before they are permitted.
Join the debate
We want to hear your views on the social and ethical impact of making these techniques available to patients. Visit our website www.hfea.gov.uk <http://www.hfea.gov.uk> where you can read about the new techniques and the issues they may raise. Then complete our online questionnaire to ensure your views are conveyed to the Government.
We are holding two public meetings where there will be a chance for you to learn about the techniques involved in mitochondria replacement, pose questions to a panel of experts, explore the issues and, most importantly, share your views.
Meeting dates:
London (Euston) meeting - Tuesday 13 November, 6:30 - 8:30pm
Manchester (Central Manchester) meeting - Thursday 22 November, 6:30 - 8:30pm
