DETAILS: Summer 2012 saw the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad – the 55 million pound arts programme of the London Olympics – with the launch of the London 2012 Festival. Central to the festival were a range of events that presented German culture to the national and international audiences of the Olympiad.
This event will focus on two of the most high-profile productions in the Olympiad: the Pina Bausch World Cities programme at the Barbican and Sadler’s Wells, and the Bremer Shakespeare Company’s production of Timon of Athens within the Globe to Globe Festival at Shakespeare’s Globe. During the evening, a panel of experts will reflect on the extent to which the framework of the Olympiad provided us with new ways of viewing German culture as a form of international cultural capital, and what happens when German companies stage their work in spaces meant to represent both the nation state and its cosmopolitanist mobility.
Dr Kate Elswit is Lecturer in Theatre and Performance in the Department of Drama: Theatre, Film, Television at the University of Bristol.
