Rachel & Carl both make really important and clear points here.
I made the FoI request for Ruskin's RM policy & retention schedule (see comments on Hilda Kean's original blog posting http://www.historyworkshop.org.uk/whose-archive-whose-history-destruction-of-archives-at-ruskin-college-oxford/) and will certainly update both the blog comments and this list when I receive a response.
You can follow the request at http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/records_management#outgoing-227240
Appraisal, retention & disposal are areas of the work of record keepers (BOTH archivists AND records managers) which seem to me to be misunderstood at best and downright muddled at worst. The terms in which this particular issue is being discussed appear to encapsulate a mutual misunderstanding with which at the very least we should all be concerned.
Best wishes
Sarah
