Except that the classic SE relied on the information system completely since there was no management interface to provide any other information. And given the evolution of publishing since then I'm not sure we could even define how things should be published any more, at least without some discussion. Note that globus-GRIDFTP is a valid service type in the GOC DB if you simply want to advertise gridftp as a standalone service.

That is of course true - in fact as far as I know the flag in the GOC DB has had no effect whatever for a long time. This has just become part of the general cleanup with the removal of obsolete services, which is being treated as a security issue overall.
