At Christ Church we have a 20-20-20-credit structure for our PG Cert. The first part is core and compulsory, and the last part is an AR project, which is also compulsory. The middle block is optional – and comprises mini modules (10 credits each) – where they must elect to take two – in accord with own current CPD needs. They can also pick up the others as non-credit bearing workshops should they choose.
All academic staff on contracts 0.5 or above (or the equivalent) must undertake the PG Cert programme if they have less than one year’s UK HE teaching experience; if between 1-3 years then it’s by agreement with HoDs; and above 3 years it’s by own CPD choice. Those on contracts below 0.5 just take the first 20-credit core.
We have one Exam Board per year with a 3 yr registration period, giving participants the option of completing after one year, two years – or, if necessary, after three years. This is generous, I know, but the portfolios tend to be better for it, i.e. not perfunctory. In reality, most complete in two years, but the taught modules can all be undertaken in one year – to enable the portfolio be completed in one year.
I think a key issue is the `remission’ people are given for completing the programmes, and perhaps this could be a third question. I know at some places it’s rather generous (150 hrs perhaps?!) but at other places it’s zero – which might explain why some people can complete the programmes rather quickly, particularly if they only get that remission for one year. I’ve also heard of pay being used as an `incentive’ i.e. you get paid less until you complete – that would surely increase the speed of completion!!! (- any confirmation out there, or are these just rumours?). I’ve asked for a teaching remission formula to be applied at my place because some HoDs seem generous and some not so! And then there’s remission for mentors…
Hope this makes sense. I know we’ve talked about this before and David (Gosling) – if you’re out there – you completed an interesting survey of some of these issues a while back. Perhaps we might revisit that and do an update???

Subject: Level of compulsory credits in PGCert LTHE
Dear All
Apologies if this question may have been asked recently - there have been a few around PGCerts flying about.
We are revalidating our PG Cert in Learning & Teaching in HE at LJMU this year and I wondered if you could advise on the following two questions:
1. How many credits within your PGCerts are compulsory?
2. How long do your staff have to complete the programme?
Any responses would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Rachel
