Apologies to those who may have heard this; but Jill's phrasing
stirred a now much used memory
Years ago I was charged with escorting a visiting poet to his hotel
in London
He's a person I like very much; but a little demonstrative, one who
in my youth might have attracted various euphemisms, including not
the marrying kind
So we strode up to this desk of this smart hotel, he travel rumpled
and I doing my best and failing, to be stared down at by a
supercilious young man recently out of school and the barber's.
My friend and colleague explained who he was and asked for him to
be registered. The clerk looked at him with displeasure and said
"Yes" (very slowly) " but your room isn't ready yet"
Unabashed the other replied in flamboyant tones "Oh rooms can be
like that sometimes. You let me talk to it and I'm sure we'll come to
an arrangement"
That key arrived quickly. The clerk was red-faced; and the cleaners
were delighted to be told that we didn't care what the room looked
like as he probably wouldn't know by the time he came home.
I retain "can be like that" as a fond memory
