Hi Carol,
Further to your query, I can advise that a few years ago we at Middlesbrough College LRC went with podcasts for the purpose as an induction aid. The podcasts were transferred to portable MP3 devices for the purpose of self guided tours. The content was presented in bulletin style, outlining the main resources and services provided. The audio bulletins were numbered in relation to sign-posting within the LRC. The narrative directed students in sequential order so that students could pause at designated points to hear brief information about corresponding resources and services.
The type of content and services included:
Access and accessibility,
PCs: Desktop (advanced booking), Kiosk(Walk-up) and Laptop (WiFi connected),
Multimedia,
Quiet Study areas,
Skills For Life, ESOL and related reading levels,
OPAC searches for hard-copies and eBooks, Journals, CDs, DVDs, etc
Loan types and issue protocol,
Specialist software: assistive technologies and multimedia packages, etc
Assignment submissions, binding and laminating,
Last year we progressed from podcasts to vodcasts. In fact we really pushed the boat out with a 3 D interactive vodcast in addition to a questionnaire and a brief VLE demonstration with access to database, online Catalog searches and library loan accounts. It was quite comprehensive, but on reflection rather ambitious. For a significant number the 3 D experience made an impact. However, a significant minority did not receive the experience so well due in part to some optical limitations of the equipment used. This year we reverted to a 2D interactive vodcast. We have yet to analyse the feed back data to say whether it has been a success or not.
Podcasts have a place - especially for sight-impaired students - for their ease to produce content and for accessibility of the equipment required to use them on. But for most students, audio visual will beat audio learning, alone, hands down. The challenge, though, comes with production technicalities and in meeting production costs.
Hope this helps,
Dave Millington,
ILT Advisor,
Middlesbrough College.
