The DAAD Sprachassistenten Programme
1. Programme Description
In addition to the DAAD Lektoren programme, the DAAD offers 10-month scholarships for young
German graduates with at least a Bachelor’s degree to gain experience in teaching German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and Landeskunde at German Departments in Great Britain and Ireland.
The programme is designed for university graduates of German, DaF and/or English Studies (Bachelor, Master, Magister or Staatsexamen). Experience in teaching DaF is desired but not a prerequisite.
The aim of the scholarship scheme is the qualification in the teaching of DaF on an academic level by the means of practical experience abroad. The scholarship holders should teach German Language and Area Studies to students of German Studies, Translation Studies or German for Non-Specialists. The maximum teaching load per week should not exceed 8 hours.
Sprachassistenten are placed at institutions where they can be mentored either by a DAAD-Lektor or another permanent member of staff. The host institutions are selected by the DAAD on the basis of an application and the placement process tries to take into account the host institution’s special requests concerning the profile of the candidate.
2. Application procedure
Applications from Departments which would like to have a Sprachassistent in the next academic
year (2013/2014) should reach the DAAD-London by 7th December 2012.
The informal letter of application should include a description of the host institution, particularly, the German Section/Department, including details of student numbers and degree courses offered. It should also contain a description of the teaching load and course profile envisaged for the Sprachassistent, mentioning extracurricular activities the scholarship holder may get involved in.
We would also like information on the post holder’s working conditions (provision of an appropriate work space, computer with internet access and research and teaching facilities). In instances where there is no DAAD-Lektor employed by the Department, information on who is going to act as a mentor for the Sprachassistent is important.
The DAAD will be able to inform the applying institutions on the success of their application by the end of January 2013. The interviews of prospective scholarship holders will take place in February at the DAAD-head office in Bonn, after which the DAAD-London is able to suggest suitable candidates to the respective Departments.
In order to facilitate the post holders’ integration into the staff-body of the host institution the DAAD London office suggests registering the scholarship holder as “externally funded visiting staff” with the Human Resources Department of the host institution prior to the arrival of the Sprachassistent.
The Sprachassistent will be entirely funded on the basis of a DAAD scholarship paid out to the Assistent on a monthly basis.
