There was a panel at the AAG 2009 in Las Vegas on the Geography of Mars, which covered both human and physical geography. Discussions addressed anything from the political/cultural use of Mars (starting from the observed/imagined 'canals' on Mars) to comparative studies on climate change.

I used to follow the nano-bio projects/funding to do with Mars terraforming. In the process, I came across the peculiar political move that is/was the US (Bush-era) Mars Millennium Project, whose main website is now defunct. Some traces still exist. I wish I had downloaded the original site at the time - it was quite something...
