The Fourth International Conference on Emotional Geographies in Groningen, The Netherlands, on 1-3 July 2013.
SOUND AND EMOTION
(session organisers: Karolina Doughty, University of Brighton and Maja Lagerqvist, Stockholm University)
In the social sciences, sound and music have been confined to the periphery of writing on public life when in fact the soundscape plays a crucial role in how places are encountered, idealised, contested and (re)interpreted. With an interest in how sounds enliven places and impact experiences and relations in places, this session explores the emotional and/or affective significance of sonic landscapes.
In this interdisciplinary session, we seek to engage different scholars in conversations around the impact of sounds on emotions and the ways in which these shape place encounters, conviviality and the potential of places to be experienced in different ways. We are interested in contributions at different scale levels as well as different approaches to considering sounds in research. These contributions include, but are not limited to:
• different peoples' experiences of soundscapes
• the role of sounds in engineering the atmosphere of place
• the impact of sounds on wellbeing
• The role of sound in creating convivial spaces
• sounds and place attachment
• representations of sounds
• sounds and affect
• Theoretical and conceptual contributions
• Methodological developments of the study of sound, place and emotion
Please send abstracts (up to 300 words) to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] by 5 January 2013.
