Helen asked below about searching for a particular function. I must admit
to being fuzzy about exactly *how* this works, but think it is possible to
conduct searches for $e functions that doesn't rely on searching a full
string (ie you would search the name part plus the presence of a particular
$e appearing in that field but not for the precise string "Smith, John, $e
composer".
Whether all systems can do this is another question I cannot answer I'm
afraid,

No, you can have multiple $e with a single heading and we have seen examples like that in downloaded RDA records.
