I do not know of the paper you refer to, I'd be interested if you find it.
Like several others we use prayer trees here and other forms of prayer activities that go broadly under what was being called 'liquid worship'. We have prayer zones set up in our faith centre and in other areas of the hospital from time to time. If the student you refer to would like to talk to us about any of it please feel free to put them in touch.
I think there was an article about the prayer tree here through 'fresh expressions' a few years ago, might be worth looking at if you can find it.

I have a student currently doing some work on prayer in chaplaincy
Some many years ago I seem to remember that an artilce was written that talked of the prayer tree in the chapel as a kind of window into the pain of the hospital.
I am desperately trying to track down this article or reference to it.
Can anyone offer any kind of help please
