Herron School of Art and Design, on the urban campus of Indiana University, is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Visual Communication Design at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin fall 2013. Herron School of Art and Design offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Fine Arts and in Visual Communication Design. Herron enrolls approximately 900 students of whom 130 are VC undergraduates. In 2007 we added a graduate program that continues to grow. Nine tenured/tenure-track faculty teach in our department with support from adjunct professors and lecturers; this is a new tenure-track position. Tenure-track faculty have a course load approximating a 3/2 schedule and are eligible for significant university support in areas of research. Research and Service are expected of successful applicants.
We are seeking applicants with a terminal degree to join us in continuing to build and develop our highly successful VC Department. Ours is an exciting, evolving and responsive curriculum grounded in concepts and practice that include Transformation Design, User Experience Design and Design for Understanding as apprehended through the discipline of Visual Communication. In VC we seek to provide students with educational experiences that cross boundaries, embrace collaboration and engage communities; our program encourages students to bring a human-centered perspective to their design process.
Especially sought are applicants who demonstrate engagement with service design and/or design for sustainability. Applicants should have a thorough understanding of service design methodology and a background that includes contextual research, co-creation and visualization.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate level courses in the Visual Communication Department.
- Advise and support undergraduate and graduate students concerning academic and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with area colleagues in advancing curriculum within the Visual Communication Design Department.
- Contribute to the values of the department as a place that is open, creative and academically rigorous.
- Conduct scholarly research in design, design education and/or creative practice in the area of expertise.
- Serve on department, school and university committees.
- Engage in regional, national or international service to advance the discipline of design.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must hold a terminal degree in their field of expertise related to Visual Communication Design or a design related field.
- Demonstrate theoretical and/or practical knowledge of the utilization of visual language as a means to clarify, energize and humanize communication.
- Experience teaching in a university setting beyond Teaching Assistant is preferred.
- Demonstrate a commitment to a collaborative design approach to finding and solving meaningful problems.
- Demonstrated experience in visual communication design relative to one or more of the following: design thinking/theory, research, strategy, service, design and business, design and health care, information design, innovation in social and/or community based initiatives, sustainability, interaction design, emerging media and technologies.

About the Department:
The Department of Visual Communication Design has an established reputation for research that advances designing as a collaborative process for identifying root problems and facilitating meaningful solutions to complex issues. Student attainment of essential competencies is achieved through the recognition that 'students will enter the field expected to address multiple design functions and responsibilities, including form making and strategy.' (NASAD) The department includes 11 full-time faculty members who teach 130 full-time students in a "residential" studio context.
