Hi all,
I'm working (with Andy Minnon at the Rix Centre at UEL and Liz Tilley, Faculty of Health and Social Care/Social History of Learning Disability Group) on developing a bid to use action research to understand the issues involved in creating a web-based Inclusive Digital Archive of Learning Disability History. The key issues the bid will explore are questions of control over your own histories, ethics of sharing upsetting or shocking archive material; questions of informed consent and capacity to consent and an inclusive and usable interface for people with learning difficulties and for all in terms of uploading histories and using the site. A big focus of the bid is working inclusively with self-advocacy groups and archives in places outwith 'official' archives or museums and creating possibilities for sharing and archiving their documents and oral histories. However, we do also want to explore ways for museums and archives to also contribute their collections easily – so considering possible interfaces between Mimsey or other collections databases and whatever we end up producing.
I just wanted to get some sense at this point of what you think the technical and practical issues might be? Which are the key collections databases we would need to take into account (Mimsey but are there any others which are widely used?)? Are there any examples of crowd sourcing sites which have the capacity to speak directly to collections databases as a way of drawing up images or scans?
The aim of this strand of the project would then be scoping the issues out in further detail and working them through via the action research development component.
I would really appreciate any thoughts people might have.
Best wishes, Helen
