A few places remain for the NetIKX (Network for Information and Knowledge Exchange) AGM and seminar next week.
Title: Ensuring business value and cost-effectiveness in what we do
Speakers: Roger Farbey, Megan Roberts
Date & time: Tuesday 25 September 2012, 14.00-17.00
Venue: The British Dental Association, 64 Wimpole St, W1G 8YS (nearest underground station Bond Street)
Overview:
Our two speakers for this seminar, although operating in two very different sectors, both have a commitment to deliver value, and ensure cost effectiveness to both internal and external clients - so we thought they would have some good insights into this important topic.
Learning objectives:
* To gain insights into how different businesses can deliver business value to their clients (both internal and external)
* To consider different ways of ensuring cost effectiveness in how we work
* To consider the implications of cost constraints in how we deliver value, and how value is perceived by our clients
Speakers and topics:
Roger Farbey - BDA
How to justify the implementation and continuation of a new KM service
* How can a small to medium sized company justify the expenditure of both adopting a KM strategy and appointing a new full-time post of Knowledge Manager?
* How can a Knowledge Manager convince the Directors and staff of the company to "buy into" KM? What hurdles do they need to overcome?
* What are the strategies and practical actions that they must adopt in order to achieve their goals?
* In short, does KM ensure business value and cost effectiveness?
* Conversely, does it make business sense to do without KM?
* Finally, if resistance to KM becomes intractable is there a remedy for reversing this resistance?
This talk focuses on the case study of how the BDA introduced KM and how it aims to keep it going.
Roger Farbey is Head of Library & Knowledge Services at the British Dental Association (BDA) where he has been in post since 1991. In this time he has introduced a Library Management System and online searching (Medline) to the BDA and an online public access catalogue (OPAC), which he insisted, would be available to all including non-members ("to show them what they were missing"). He is Chair of the Dental Librarians Group and has been a Management Committee Member of the CILIP SIG UKeiG (and a member of this Group for over 35 years). He was instrumental in introducing KM to the BDA in 2009 when he appointed the Association's first Knowledge Manager, Nikki West. He is a founder member of CHILL, the Consortium of Health Information Libraries in London. He is a Fellow of CILIP and was made an MBE for Services to Dentistry and Dental Information in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours.
Megan Roberts - Oxford Innovation
Cost effectiveness: providing a service and proving value without a budget
Megan has been working at Oxford Innovation, a small business support company, since 2008. She is currently providing a one-woman information service whilst juggling the vagaries of small company budgeting, allocating costs to specific projects rather than having a central budget. As an information professional, how can you reinforce the importance of information and knowledge management, of the expertise of a professional in research or the knowledge of legislation that can help discourage illegal practices?
Megan will outline how she works at Oxford Innovation and the lessons others can learn from her experience.
Megan Roberts (@MeganJRoberts) is Information and e-media specialist for business support company Oxford Innovation. She provides specialist support to businesses and staff on using Social Media for business. In her role at Oxford Innovation, Megan combines specific knowledge with coaching. She can provide research to support business decisions, or talk through issues to let people find the answer that is right for them. She utilises strong online research skills coupled with online databases and the British Libraries resources to compile comprehensive reports on markets, customers and businesses. She also helps companies work out if and what they should be doing with social networking tools. Internally, Megan has also developed and implemented social networking strategies, provided expertise as part of development teams for ICT systems and played a key role in Oxford Innovation's marketing activities. Megan is also vice-chair of UKeiG (UK electronic information group: http://www.ukeig.org.uk/)
