Surely you mean an iPad considering iPods are for audio files?

Dear All,

Having visited the OS Archaeology Section in Southampton, it was really
useful to see both the cards and the maps with marginalia written in by
OGS Crawford, mostly in red ink. You got real sense of 'process' in the
development of HERs.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Tim

my understanding is along these lines

they were generated by the OS Archaeology Section, and at some point
archived with the RCHME/NMR/EH ((whatever it was called at the time) to
form the basis of many NMR records (and this is why NMR numbers have the
format they do, NZ 23 NW 5 etc, to continue the numbering from the OS
system).

I think their original purpose was to enable the Antiquities sites to be
marked on maps.

They were organised by Map Quarter sheet (the NZ 23 NW telling you the
sheet) with the final number just being sequential on that sheet

Some are also labelled M which means marginalia, literally scribbled in
the margin of the Map and often relating to something which may have
been found in that map area but couldn't be located accurately.

My understanding/interpretation is that they were formed/updated on the
basis of Source trawling as well as local surveyors field work eg
references I have seen vary from mentioning talking to someone about
some finds and then going to visit the person who had the finds, as well
as just bibliographic sources for sites.

As to when they were given to LA's don't know, but in our case it seems
we
(DCC) started from that point on using the same numbering system, as did
OS, so there are sites with the same NMR type number which are not the
same site...

As far as I can tell, most of the textual information is available on
Pastscape, but often they have sketches on which aren't on pastscape. It
would be worth confirming this yourself though - as this may vary by
area (I have no idea)

Their quality varies depending on the Surveyor, but generally they refer
to real things, even if their interpretations are not ones I would agree
with

hope that helps

best wishes

Subject: OS Record Cards

Hi
I'm writing an inventory of our holdings and I've come to the OS Record
Cards. I've used them for years without really thinking much about them
but a newer member of staff asked what they were originally used
for.....which had me slightly stumped.

There's obviously a clue in the name but are they any more than a record
of the sites recorded by the OS field surveyors? If so what are they,
how were they updated and when did they start being distributed to local
authorities etc etc

in ignorance
