Dear Andrew,
It's Cambridge -- there's a fair chance that some of the audience will have some technical knowledge of logic/philosophy, and those who don't will know enough that they should do, so I'd be inclined to go for it.
But I like to know what Gerry and the other Julian think.

Dear Julian and Gerry,
Can I dismiss this kind of thing as an instance of the either/or fallacy? I
know that it is one--my question is whether dismissal is tactically correct.

The opposition is likely to raise the question of whether capitalism has
failed or is it just failing? Or it will say capitalism is crap but any
other system is crapier. So there is no alternative. So I think those are
the issues to anticipate.

few seconds

Dear colleagues,
In a few weeks, I'll be speaking in support of the motion "This House
believes capitalism has failed" in a debate at the Cambridge Union. I have
only 8-10 minutes. I'd appreciate advice about what to focus on.
I'd also appreciate advice-do's and don'ts--from anyone who has participated
in a "formal debate" like this before. I haven't.
Please reply off-list.
Thanks,
Andrew
