Just a comment that c89 allows variables to be declared at the start
of a block so you don't need to change lines like
if (blah) {
size_t xxx;
}
to have xxx declared right at the top. The c99/C++ issue comes up when you do
blah;
blah;
size_t xxx;
blah;
