A Selective Bibliography of Sources Discussing Book Reviews and How to Write Them
.

.
.
A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed
based on content, style, and merit.[1] A book review can be a primary
source opinion piece, summary review or scholarly review.[2] Books can be
reviewed for printed periodicals, magazines and newspapers, as school
work, or for book web sites on the internet. A book review's length may
vary from a single paragraph to a substantial essay.

MEDICAL LIBRARIAN 2.0: USE OF WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGIES IN REFERENCE SERVICES.
Wood, Sandra M. ed. Binghamton, NY: Haworth Information Press, 2007

Written in January 2007
.
Social networking encompasses a growing and diversifying group of
reference and marketing activities in which libraries and medical
libraries are increasingly participating. Medical Librarian 2.0 contains
a collection of articles that provide a somewhat technical discussion of
various social bookmarking tools and methods, each chapter, devoted to a
specific type of Web 2.0 tool, is written by a specialist versed in the
application or tool that they cover. Following an introduction by editor
Sandra M. Wood and an overview by Elizabeth Conner, there is coverage of
virtual reference services in general, RSS applications, podcasting,
streaming media, social networking applications, the Drupal content
management tool, wikis and mashups. While the chapters on Wiki and Drupal
focus on discussing these applications from the point of view of a
specific product used to facilitate that service that is very familiar to
the author, other chapters like those on podcasting, virtual reference,
streaming media, and RSS cover a variety of tools and methods used for
each of these applications. Bibliographies for further reading, some quite
extensive, follow each discussion. The focus of most of the coverage
regards how to implement the services in terms of some combination of
topics such as the equipment used, policies and guidelines, training,
marketing, and the methodologies and techniques for creation of media type
productions like podcasts, wikis and mashups. Production methodologies are
quite thoroughly covered. In the front of this book, a long list of
abstracting and indexing services pertinent to medical research, as well
as lists of aggregator and of link resolver services precede the body of
this work, a quite useful addition to this book. Adding Google Books,
Worldcat, CAB and CAB Global Health to the list of indexing and
abstracting services would make that list more complete.
.
Many medical libraries have limited budgets and staffing. Perhaps because
this book covers each type of application individually, there is little or
no overall consideration given regarding how to select a mix of services
that can be adopted and supported by libraries that are constrained by
available staff and funding. Also missing is discussion regarding how to
prioritize amongst these various services and tools. Since the writing
dates from 2006, discussion of emerging issues of reference interaction
privacy in social networking services like Facebook and Myspace, including
how social networking by libraries is effected by HIPAA, is rather
limited. Brief consideration of privacy matters does occur in a section of
the chapter about virtual reference services.
.
In the 19th century, the telegraph, a keying device, was invented and
facilitated sharing of information between localities. At the end of the
19th century, the invention of the telephone provided improvement over the
telegraph through voice transmission as opposed to the keying of codes. In
library practice, in the first half of the 20th century and since,
telephones came to augment in person reference service in libraries. The
end of the 20th century witnessed the beginning of social networking.
virtual reference, starting with email reference services, provided
advancement over telephone voice transactions with keyboarding based
virtual reference services. From the email reference starting point,
interactions are now encompassing the use of text messaging, live text
chat encounters from a form on a library website, and most recently the
use of services like Facebook and MySpace as meeting grounds for reference
encounters and sharing information about libraries and their resources and
services.
.
Nevertheless, a recent Media Post Blog discussion by Max Kalehoff will
provide some help in the setting of affordable priorities for libraries
with limited funding as the article cites email as the leading social
networking service that is far in advance of all others at this point in
time.

Email Blows Away All Other Social Networks

Perhaps there is substantial merit left in the older ways of providing
library services and adoption of the new may be best accomplished by
careful analysis of service needs. Contrasting the costs of equipment and
staff time as opposed to usage levels and the benefit these new services
provide to library customers may be needed. For example, it was noted in
recent discussions on the DIG_REF discussion group of electronic reference
services that email reference has not become the "killer app" that it was
expected to be. Libraries on the one hand will need to find effective
methods of marketing the new types of services they choose to provide to
increase their use, while at the same time making sure they are really
being used in ways that improve client use and enjoyment of the library
and its services in house and online. Certainly electronic communication
tools are of critical importance to the growing number of online students
and patients who are distant from a medical facility and cannot use that
institution's medical library in person.
