Thanks to a more observant colleague than I,
I can now correct the dates of this conference to 2013 rather than 2012!
Apologies for the confusion,
Michael
Cultural Translation in Popular Music
University of Central Lancashire, Preston, 12-13 April 2013
Part of LIVE! Festival in Preston
Popular music is known for its hybrid and transcultural character. It feeds on earlier styles, cultural artefacts and different art forms and travels from country to country. At the same time, it also affects other art forms, such as cinema and advertising. The proposed conference seeks to discuss the role of cultural translation in the production, dissemination and reception of popular music, in both a historical and theoretical context. Topics proposed can include but not be limited to the following:
Music videos
Rockumentary
Cover versions of popular songs
Tribute bands
International career of pop singers
The use of classical music in pop song
Cross-cultural performance
Fashion and costume associated with music
Popular music in advertising
We particularly encourage submissions from those interested in European music.
Part of the conference will be dedicated to the Austrian singer and rapper Falco (1957-1998), one of the most transnational and transcultural musicians in the world.
