New Zealand Geographical Society Conference 2012: 3-6 December, Napier, New Zealand.
Call for Papers: 'The 'Mobilities Turn' and Geography'
Convened by Tara Duncan (University of Otago) and Maria Borovnik (Massey University)
It can be suggested that mobilities is a key component of the world today (Adey, 2010). As the mobilities 'paradigm' (Sheller and Urry, 2006) or 'turn' (Hannam et al, 2006) has gained prominence over the last decade or so, geographers (and others) have adopted, adapted and utilised this literature in numerous ways. However, Sheller and Urry (2006) also note the challenge in adopting theories to 'keep up' with the ever changing and pervasive nature of new forms of (im)mobility and Cresswell (2010) calls for attention to the politics of mobility, or rather to how movement is represented and experienced. We recognise it 'as way of addressing people, objects, things and places ... communicating meaning and significance (Adey, 2010, p. xvii). Thus, simply put, mobilities research can encompass the movements of people, objects, capital and knowledge on/at various scales (global, national, local).
In this session, we invite papers that explore the myriad ways in which mobilities research is being used by geographers. As such, possible themes could include:
* mobilities and well-being
* mobilities and neighbourhoods
* historical mobilities
* sensory experiences of movement;
* representations of movement;
* the performances of (im)mobility
* experiences of immobility;
* dwelling and place-making;
* mobile research methodologies (such as mobile ethnographies, time-space diaries, logs, blogs, video-recording etc.)
* mobility and identity
Please submit abstracts (of no more than 300 words) to Tara Duncan ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and Maria Borovnik ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by 10 October 2012.
