Hi Louise
Welcome to the list. Hope you enjoy the degree. I agree, it would be good to hear more from people on the list about what they are doing. I suspect that a lot of us don't get many opportunities to "do" community psychology in our working lives.
In our local group in Birmingham our goal seems to be to bring a community psychology influence into our work. Since we are all clinical or educational psychologists our work is usually done on behalf of the NHS or the local authority. (Outside work, we have also acted as a group to participate in demonstrations.)
I have recently taken on a secondment to supervise practitioners who are delivering an "Evidence-based Parenting Programme". We have recently discussed this in our local group and people have shared their criticisms of the concept and practice of such programmes.
The concept of Evidence-based Parenting Programmes has also been critiqued on this list. There are, however, some elements of the delivery of the programme which lend themselves to a community psychology approach.
Our local group will be a valuable source of support and criticism of my activities during this time. This will help me use a community psychology approach to inform my work.
I would recommend that you join your local community psychology group in Brighton. If there isn't one, then I would say "start one up". People have used this list as a way of doing that. (Many apologies Brighton Group if I have missed this happening already.)
Best wishes
Carl

Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] new member
Good evening to all 'Communitypsychuk' members, I am a new member-my name is Louise. I have just started an Msc in community psychology at the University of Brighton. I am very excited about the new opportunities this will bring to me but am also apprehensive about doing a degree at this level. I look forward to logging on to this site to hopefully learn what others are doing, be inspired and grow in confidence;hoping to get to know other people too.
Best wishes
Louise
