Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet invites applications for:

Biostatisticians, 2 positions

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology for different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total approximately some 250 staff. The department is situated in campus Solna. Further information can be found at www.ki.se/meb

MEB are also responsible for the degree projects at the medical program. The biostatistics group at MEB consists of appr. 30 people, with varying backgrounds (http://ki.se/biostatistics).

We are now seeking qualified biostatisticians for two positions; one with main focus on the degree project of the medical program and one focused on applied biostatistics support.

1) Position focused on the degree project at the medical program

During the seventh semester of the medical program the students do a scientific degree project, supervised by teachers from different departments of KI. MEB has the responsibility of this semester of the education. To ensure quality in the education we are now seeking an experienced statistician for the tasks

• building up and taking responsibility of a statistical resource for the degree projects at the medical program
• teaching in biostatistics
• evaluation of project plans with regard to statistical methods
• mid-term follow up and statistical consulting for projects with special needs
• participate in teaching and seminars

Apart from those tasks there is also the possibility to work with statistical consulting in medical research projects at the department.

2) Position focused on applied biostatistics in epidemiology

As an applied biostatistician at the department we work in research projects in several medical research areas. The projects are based on register data, questionnaire data, and or genetic and molecular data. The work tasks can be

• planning, design and analysis of epidemiological studies
• participate in discussions regarding interpretation of results and presentation of results in scientific articles
• practical supervision in statistics and programming to researchers and PhD-students in epidemiology
• participate in teaching and seminars
• data management issues in collaboration with data base developers at the department

There are good potentials for further training and professional development, both internal and external. We see participation in courses and conferences as a natural part in your professional development. Both positions can, to some extent, be adapted to your competence, experience and wishes. There are also possibilities to pursue your own biostatistical or epidemiological research as part of your employment.

Qualifications
For both positions you need a degree in statistics, mathematical statistics or a related field. Experience from research in epidemiology, medicine or biostatistics and/or statistical consulting are considered additional qualifications, as well as experience from the statistical soft wares SAS, Stata and R (for position 1 also SPSS). Experience and interest in genetic and molecular epidemiology is a plus for position 2. Communication skills are important, as a large part of our job is collaboration with people of other professions. You also need to be good at collaborating with other people, enjoy working on many projects simultaneously, be interested in learning more in biostatistics and epidemiology. Further you need to communicate well in English, both oral and written, as this is the working language of the department together with Swedish.

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system. Please indicate which position you are applying, or if you are looking for both. At Karolinska Institutet a 6-month trial period is required for all permanent appointments.
