Archive Assistant – Bank of England
Salary: £22,000
Location: London
51 week fixed term contract
This new post is designed as post-graduate internship for someone with a good first degree who is looking for a range of experience before undertaking a qualification in Archives. It is a fixed term contract from October 2012 to September 2013.
Based in Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England holds one of the finest business archives in the county which is of national and international importance. Holding over 80,000 items which date from when the Bank was established in 1694, the Archive is open to the public from Monday to Thursday and is heavily used. The current Archive team comprises three professional Archivists and an Historian.
The Archive is part of the new Information and Records Management team within Information Systems and Technology Division. The team also includes the Information Centre, Bank Records and Knowledge Management functions along with the EDRM System Administrative team. Please note that while the Archive has input into records management at the Bank, it has no direct responsibility for it.
We are looking for a confident and enthusiastic person to join the Bank’s Archive team and support the work of the professional staff. The post holder will assist in running the public research services, which involves supervision, responding to written and telephone enquiries and the retrieval of material from the onsite strongrooms. As the Archive undertakes a wide range of work and is very busy, it is essential that the post holder can work with minimal supervision when necessary, but can also work as part of the team. There will be opportunities to participate in all aspects of the day to day work including: reviewing; cataloguing using CALM; conservation; a range of work designed to improve the Archive profile; outreach activities include helping to prepare for and host occasional group visits and contributing ideas to improve the Archive’s web presence. The Archive works closely with other areas of the Bank, answering enquiries and undertaking research where necessary. The post involves working with highly confidential material and dealing with a wide range of people, including senior members of the Bank’s staff.
Appropriate training will be given and there will be opportunities to attend archive related events.
The closing date for applications is 2 September. Interviews will be held during the week beginning 10 September.
