Ewan hit the nail on the head here - the gridmapdir mechanism seems to
use usernames on the surface, but there could be an underlying reliance
on the UID/GID. I was hoping for confirmation that this wasn't the case,
but as always hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

This looks what like what I'm going to have to do, which makes me a
little sad. There's a lot of potential peril with this endeavour, but
I'll cross that bridge (and be attacked by the inevitable trolls that
live under it) when I come to it!
