Actually I didn't know that nagios uses it. There's a general philosophy that all services should be published - exceptions are APEL (so far not requested by anyone) and Frontier/squid (configuration available but never deployed). In EMI 2 it's also supposed to cover unicore and ARC services, but I'm not entirely sure what we got in the end. This also relates to gstat, because one of the tests it does is a cross-check between the BDII and GOC DB, but gstat development has been in something of a state of limbo.

Publication from the service should come with any standard installation, all you have to do is tell the site BDII to collect it. The infrastructure to publish any service is straightforward, the difficulty (if any) is working out how to collect the information you want to publish.
