The 1966 oversilvered round 50 cent bit was withdrawn from circulation after one year, Max, you must recall. We were told it too easily got confused with the platypus 20 cent bit in the pocket. But later it emerged thst because of the silver content, it cost more to make than its face value so it was withdrawn and replaced by the ugly, heavy, silverless twelve-sider we have had ever since. It's no use saving them, the old round ones, we were told. They'll never appreciate or anything. Prompting lots of people to do just that of course. My father had a little plastic drawer full of them in his bedside table. The first time I snuck in and knocked one off was probably as a sixteen year old who had run out of cigarettes. Not exactly the time of the reminiscences in the pantoum. But... poetic license pleaded.
Thanks, Doug, too, for your encouragement.
