Research Associateship in Experimental Platforms for Network Research
Limit of tenure: 12 months (with extension subject to grant renewal)

We are seeking multiple post-doctoral research associates to participate in the NSF-funded NetFPGA, EPSRC-funded INTERNET, and DARPA-funded MRC2 projects, which are investigating fundamental revisions to current network hardware and protocols in support of improved performance, energy efficiency, security, and resilience. These projects involve collaborations between the University of Cambridge, Stanford University, and SRI International, and are parts of larger research programmes in next-generation networking.
NetFPGA 10G is an exciting new research and teaching platform based on high-performance Xilinx FPGAs and multiple 10G PHYs, which will become the foundation for several different research projects:
* developing network and transport layers that reduce energy consumption in data centres,
* as a development platform for software defined networking,
* a teaching platform for undergraduate and graduate degree programs,
* workload-defined, hardware-accelerated, datacenter architectures, and
* alternative approaches to host and server network offload.
The position will be an integral part of an international team of researchers spanning multiple institutions across academia and industry. The successful candidate will engage in the design and implementation of new network designs, as well as their validation and evaluation.
A publication record is desirable although a track record of relevant experience will be prioritised over prior publication experience. An ideal candidate will hold (or be close to finishing) a PhD in Computer Science, or Computer Engineering; expertise in computer and network system design, the design of digital systems, and, ideally, experience with the design of networking equipment, protocols, software, and hardware. A significant facility with hardware description languages (HDLs) such as Verilog is recommended. Good interpersonal and organisational skills and the ability to work in a team are also essential.
