Dear colleagues,
Can you bring this PhD position on laboratory astrophysics to the
attention of suitable candidates?
Thanks in advance,

PhD position Solid-state Laboratory Astrophysics
===================================================
Raymond and Beverly Sackler Laboratory for Astrophysics
Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, the Netherlands
Deadline: September 20, 2012
A 4-yr PhD position is available at the Raymond and Beverly Sackler
Laboratory for Astrophysics of Leiden Observatory. The research
concerns the simulation of the chemical processes that take place on
the surfaces of dust grains in star- and planet-forming regions in
interstellar space. This research will make use of fully operational
state-of-the-art UHV surface science experiments in which interstellar ice
analogues at temperatures of 10-90 K are bombarded with atoms and/or UV
radiation (see www.laboratory-astrophysics.eu for more information).
The focus within this PhD project will be on nitrogen-containing
molecules. The laboratory experiments are directly linked to astronomical
observations on complex organic molecules from the Atacama
Large Millimeter Array. The research will be directed by
Prof. E.F. van Dishoeck and Prof. H. Linnartz.
We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a background in
instrumentation, experimental physics, physical chemistry, surface
science or laboratory based astrophysics.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae (with a list of grades
for exams), as well as a brief statement of research
experience. Applicants should arrange for two letters of reference to
be uploaded to the website. Review of applications will start on
September 20, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. The
starting date for the position is flexible, and can be anytime between
late 2012 and spring 2013. The position is open to students of all
nationalities with the equivalent of a Masters degree in astronomy,
physics or chemistry.
