Interdisciplinary Conference
May 9-11, 2013 – Venice, Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista
Proposals are invited for papers to be presented at the conference, which
will consider the church of the Frari in Venice in its historical,
artistic and religious context from its foundation in the early 13th
century to the present day.
The conference will be interdisciplinary and welcomes submissions from
potential speakers on subjects such as: Franciscan traditions in Venice
and the Veneto; competition with the Dominican order; relationships with
the Venetian Republic; theology, preaching and intellectual life; liturgy,
ritual and music; the administration of the Frari’s property and
endowments; charitable works and the role of the devotional guilds
(scuole); relics and devotional cults; architectural and artistic
traditions; the patronage of art and architecture; funerary monuments and
the commemoration of the dead; the post-Napoleonic designation as a parish
church and the modern restoration of buildings and works of art.
The conference seeks to highlight new insights, cross-disciplinary themes
and/or fresh critical readings.
