Assemble 2012, The Crafts Council conference will take place at RIBA, London on 20 September 2012.
Assemble 2012 will bring together a diverse group of individuals to explore the contribution craft makes to innovation and enterprise, and the relationship between making, digital, science and technology.
Confirmed contributors include keynote speaker Marie O’Mahony, Professor of Advanced Textiles, OCAD University, Toronto, Rhian Solomon, Director and founder of sKINship, exploring the connections between pattern-cutting and plastic surgery; and textile technologist Julian Ellis on how embroidery has improved performance and safety in the auto industries.
The day will include filmed contributions from Professor Roger L Kneebone, Professor of Surgical Education, Imperial College London, and David Gauntlett, Professor of Media and Communications, University of Westminster and author of Making is Connecting who will be answering crowd-sourced questions on craft in a collaborative culture.
Craft makers already work within a range of industries bringing specialist skills to sectors ranging from biotechnology, engineering and materials science to manufacturing and digital and communications technology. They collaborate with scientists, engineers and technologists to drive innovation and introduce new ways of thinking.
Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and the Creative Industries will provide the government’s perspective on makers’ value in these other sectors.
Industries are now radically re-appraising how they assemble, repair, generate and work with materials and the systems through which they do this. This means there will be many opportunities for makers and designers to contribute their specialist skills and knowledge of materials and help re-imagine new systems and processes.
Assemble 2012 will explore how the unique skills of makers can contribute to these developments via a series of keynote speeches, panel discussions and workshops over one day.
