Dear All
At 08:12 on 27th July 2012, thousands of people across the UK will be
joining together to ring in the first day of the London 2012 Olympic
Games with Martin Creed's Work No.1197 for 'All the Bells'. Everyone
across the country is invited to take part. You can find out more, and
discover 'All the Bells' events near you, at http://www.allthebells.com/
There's such a lot of maths in bell-ringing that we felt that the
Millennium Mathematics Project (http://mmp.maths.org) couldn't miss out
on taking part in 'All the Bells'. So we will be joining in, but of
course we'll also be doing some maths at the same time - and if anyone
wants to explore maths while ringing along we've even provided the bell!
At 8.12 am on Friday morning we will be turning up the sound on our
laptops and ringing the interactive online bells in our mathematical
activity 'You Owe Me Five Farthings, Say the Bells of St Martins'
(http://nrich.maths.org/allthebells), freely accessible to anyone on our
NRICH website. If you'd like to do the same, just go to
http://nrich.maths.org/allthebells to try your hand at bell ringing and
working out the mathematical pattern to follow, while simultaneously
making a joyful and celebratory noise!
Best wishes,
Julia Hawkins
