I can't agree about the recipe books. Some of our most heavily used cookery books at home were my mothers.

The messages posted by John Dolan, Liz McGettigan and others are spot on - not because of who they are or their professional/intellectual standing, but on the strength of their arguments.
The suggestion that 'many less well developed countries' would welcome the books is rather debatable. It is quality they need, just as much as quantity - so it is safe to say 1970s recipe books and 1980s computer manuals are not what they need or want.
Donations are not 'free' - managing, storing and transporting the books imply costs to donor and recipient: in the case of donations overseas these can be quite considerable. J Solis
