I regard my letters and emails to another person to be my intellectual property, not be used without my permission, not to be amended in any way. On the other hand there is 'fair dealing', for news reporting for example, but only if the 'work' has previously been lawfully published. (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988
• 1988 c. 48
• Part I
• Chapter III
• General
• Section 30)
Where sound recordings are concerned the Act says this:
(3)No acknowledgement is required in connection with the reporting of current events by means of a sound recording, film [F3or broadcast where this would be impossible for reasons of practicality or otherwise].
There have been broadcasts of taped incidents (video and sound) which could only have been obtained by covert means. Then the issue is 'public interest'.
It's hugely controversial, people have lost their jobs and their professional registration both by making the secret recordings and being prosecuted, after being exposed by the recordings.
My point earlier was that if everyone conducted their work life on the basis that there might, without their knowledge, be recordings taken, would they conduct themselves more ethically, morally and professionally?

Lots of precedents - including that a business letter attracts
copyright, very analogous to this topic - Tim Padfield's Copyright for

and authoritative source.
