being sleepless in Bath, UK on my holidays, I had the chance to read through
what I have missed so far. I would like to add some further comments on the
And first of all: they are optimistic.
From all I know a new art form always has to change the thinking and perception
so it can be appreciated. This is good, otherwise it wouldn't be new or good.
This is tough
at the beginning of all the once who are early, but if they are good enough and
they will probaly receive their acknowledgment in their lifetime. Specailly in a
culture, which we live in now, where communication flows fast and artists can
quick career in a short amount of time.
This is what I have experienced over the last 20 years. The getthoization of the
new media art
scene is selfmade of course, at the beginning a survival mechanism, but now it's
to step out of it and prove yourself outside.
SEdition is a very good example of the establishment of digital media in our
and the art world. It's not very helpful for our field and doesn't really try to
serious art, just merchandising as explained by Domenico. And by including
like Rafael R. and Aaron K. it makes it even more confusing for the public. It's
idea and that's about it...but after all the the art world is a business as
It shows that people are ready for something like that.
And on the othee hand, that time is ready for the real thing, digital media, as
I prefer to call it.
The platforms are there with our potentail customers and it's up to us
to get some good art on there - and sold.
Right now we have more and more ditital art being presented in museums and
e.g. the Anthony McCall show at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. So I can only say,
happening out there.
Let me say one more thing about the argument of just calling it art: of course
about art as such and these are the standards we all have to refer to, but still
is different, with own conceptual implications and possibillities. Like
photograpy in the 20th
century it's going to influence our culture in the 21st century drastically.
The very best and hopefully a better summer in our part of Europe.
