REGIONAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION EARLY CAREER CONFERENCE 2012
CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline for abstract submission: 31st July 2012
Times of Change: Future Directions in Geography, Urban and Regional Studies
Thursday 1st ? Friday 2nd November 2012, HafenCity University,
Hamburg, Germany
Recent developments demonstrate that the world economy is a dynamic
space evolving in unpredictable ways. On the one hand these changing
trajectories of regional economies provide an opportunity for scholars
to develop new research projects; but on the other they require
researchers to sharpen existing theoretical approaches and develop new
theoretical perspectives to describe emerging phenomena accurately.
In the context of the ongoing financial and economic crisis there is a
pressing need to think about the future of geography and regional
studies, and how they contribute to our understanding of recent
developments and help reshape the future. Topics include the analysis
of how the financial industry operates across space and how it shapes
the development of local and regional economies. Related to this
phenomenon is the ?re-emerging? issue of uneven development within
Europe. Prior to the crisis notions of convergence within Europe
dominated debates, but with the economic crisis the situation has
reversed once again, with ?Northern? and ?Southern? Europe drifting
apart. Another important development is that after years of talking
about ?embedded networks? in shaping regional development, ?the
market? has moved back as a field of study in order to understand
economic processes and practices of consumption, production and
exchange on a local as well as on a global level. Overall there is a
need to continue to extend our theoretical perspectives in the light
of recent developments.
This conference will shed light on these (re-)emerging themes,
bringing together a panel of established academics with early career
researchers and postgraduate students. In doing so it tries to chart
avenues for future research themes and theoretical approaches in
economic geography and regional studies. It is an opportunity to learn
about new trends.
We invite participations within, but not exclusively, the following topics:
* Geographies of financial markets and institutions
* Uneven development in Europe
* Institutions in urban and regional development
* Markets and marketization
* New perspectives on Evolutionary Economic Geography
* Innovation and knowledge
