The BSC Learning and Teaching Network are pleased to announce the results of the 2012 National Award for Teaching Excellence in Criminology. The winners are the Centre for Criminal Justice and Criminology at Swansea University for their undergraduate programme and Dr Giles Barrett of Liverpool John Moores receives a commended award for his work on internationalising the curriculum. Each of these award winners demonstrated alignment to the UK Professional Standards Framework (http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ukpsf ) and it was evident that their students both inform, and are informed by, the learning experiences developed with each institution.
Thanks go to the judges of this award and to Sage for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the prize. The awards will be made by Professor Richard Sparks at the Sage reception of the British Society of Criminology annual conference on July 5th.

ASSESS is an independent user led group for SPSS and R, computer packages for analysing and presenting data. Recent ASSESS workshop topics include SPSS/R syntax, SPSS macros, Logistic regression and Hospital Episode Statistics.
Two sets of two half-day parallel workshops and two tutorial sessions are provisionally planned to be held at the Alcuin Research Resource Centre, University of York, on Friday 2nd November 2012. The R workshops and a tutorial session on 'Health Applications in SPSS' will run in parallel from 10am to (approx) 12-45pm and two SPSS workshops and tutorials on 'First steps in data analysis using R', from 1-50pm to (approx) 4-30pm. Each delegate may, therefore, attend a morning workshop or tutorial session and/or an afternoon workshop or tutorial session.
Workshop topics and other details including booking forms are at http://www.spssusers.co.uk/Events/2012/confprog.html. The workshops and tutorials will be taught in an interactive hands-on workshop-style format, with frequent examples. A full set of notes and example files will be given to all workshop attenders. There will also be handouts at the tutorial sessions.
Simon White of the MRC Biostatistics Unit in Cambridge, who will lead the 'Beginning with R:Comparing Groups' workshop, looks at applications of statistics to public health issues and teaches R to non-statisticians. Thom Baguley of Nottingham Trent University will lead 'An Introduction to Statistical Modeling in R'. Thom has twenty years of teaching and research experience and is the author of 'Serious Statistics'. Angie Wade is a senior lecturer in biostatistics at University College London and will lead the 'Chi-squares and logistic regressions in SPSS' workshop. David Culliford, who will lead the 'Survival Analysis with Healthcare Applications using SPSS' workshop, teaches on statistical issues surrounding research design and researches osteoarthritis at the University of Southampton.
The 'Beginning with R:Comparing Groups' workshop assumes no previous experience using R and will introduce basic concepts and structures used in R together with simple plotting and group comparison procedures. 'An Introduction to Statistical Modeling in R' is a workshop building on a basic knowledge of R showing how to perform a range of statistical analyses in R including AN(C)OVA, regression, meta-analysis and bootstrapping. The SPSS workshops assume a working knowledge of SPSS and an awareness of basic statistical concepts. The 'Chi-square tests and logistic regressions in SPSS' workshop will introduce analyses of categoric data. The 'Survival analysis with Healthcare Applications using SPSS' workshop introduces commonly used elementary techniques analysing time-to-event data.
The booking fee includes a coffee break mid-workshop but not overnight accommodation. A buffet lunch is available and is included for those attending both a morning AND an afternoon event. Further details will be sent to delegates upon receipt of booking forms.
Come along to:

Subject: FW: Exploring 'the Precariat': A Research Symposium
A day conference convened by the CRA$ (crime, resistance and security research cluster), School of Applied Social Science University of Brighton: Wednesday 12 September 2012
http://www.brighton.ac.uk/sass/research/conferences/precariat-flyer.pdf
Exploring issues from Guy Standing's book The Precariat: the New Dangerous Class, key themes at this conference include:
Precariousness: Policies and politics;
Security, control and the precariat;
Precarious experiences and lived realities.
Speakers so far confirmed include:
Guy Standing, Bill Jordan, Robert MacDonald , Tracy Shildrick , Bridget Anderson, Wendy Fitzgibbon , Simon Hallsworth , Jacqui O'Reilly , John Lea , Peter Squires , James Treadwell , Kate Hardy, Lynda Measor, Denise Martin
Whether one agrees with Guy Standing's analysis of the origins of the Precariat: the New Dangerous Class, or not, it is difficult to overlook the emergence of new social and political preoccupations with precariousness – and its implications, within contemporary 'broken', unequal, fragmenting, punitive or neo-liberal society/ies.
Accordingly this day conference will seek to interrogate the various dimensions of precarity that characterise the 'fault lines of the social', whether they be rooted in choice, circumstance or condition; experiences of inclusion or exclusion; discrimination, marginality or resistance; divisions of race, sex, age, gender or identity; or reproduced through the political practices of states, the operation of labour markets or more diffuse cultural or inter-personal processes.
The aim of the day is to offer a critically constructive engagement with the broad themes of Standing's argument both exploring and applying his ideas. We approach this from perspectives informed primarily by criminology, sociology and policy studies but aim to develop a genuinely inter-disciplinary dialogue. Although Standing has signalled the arrival of the 'precariat' as a 'new dangerous class' this is not our only concern: we are as interested in the consequences of 'precarity' be they crime, criminalisation and division, as we are with under-standing the production of 'precarious lives' and the struggles, resistances and conflicts that these entail.
In due course, as in the case of our earlier symposium on Wacquant event, we will be hoping to publish the papers from the symposium in an edited book.
The conference will take place in the Checkland Building, on the Falmer Campus of the University of Brighton, on Wednesday 12 September 2012 from 9am to 5pm.
Guy Standing will open proceedings with a keynote address to be followed by 12-15 invited contributions and concluding with a discussion panel.
Cost for the day : £50 including lunch and refreshments.
Numbers will be limited. To book a place call Peter Squires or Denise Martin or send a cheque (made payable to University of Brighton) or request an invoice:
