Today's Times Higher includes a letter from Dr Georgina Brewis publicising
the forthcoming launch of the Campaign for Voluntary Sector Archives (CVSA)
at the House of Lords on 15 October.
It appears in response to an entertaining piece on 28 June by Professor John
Sutherland headed 'Raiders of the lost archives', in which the author
laments the loss of physical discovery in academic research. His shrewd
observations on the impact of electronic access and digitisation are well
worth reading, but, as Brewis points out, his conclusions are premature. In
the current economic climate, the records of many voluntary organisations
remain at risk, and the future of research in the sector is threatened.
This is why the CVSA has been formed, and why we will take every opportunity
to publicise our launch in the months to come.
