MRC Clinical Trials Unit and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Programme Leader in Methodological Research and Professor of Medical Statistics

Competitive Salary

We are looking for a recognised international leader in methodological research relevant to clinical trials. This new joint appointment, at the professorial level, will help develop and underpin an exciting new collaboration between the MRC Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and the Department of Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). The individual will direct and develop methodological research of relevance to the CTU and LSHTM. This appointment is expected to help initiate and stimulate a broad-ranging programme across the two institutions of internationally competitive research to improve the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of clinical trials, potentially extending to meta-analyses and observational studies of treatments.

The MRC CTU and LSHTM are a short walk apart, in a pleasant area of Central London, facilitating close collaborative links. The post-holder will be based in both institutions

The MRC CTU is internationally recognised for its national and international clinical trials, meta-analyses and epidemiological studies, with a strong focus on cancer and infectious diseases. With the appointment of a new Director in 2010, methodological research is being developed as a major focus of activity. In 2008, CTU was awarded funding from the MRC to become one of eight regional Hubs for Trials Methodology Research, established to develop new and improved methods to design, conduct and analyse clinical trials (and related studies).

The LSHTM is an international leader in public health research and teaching. Several departments have expertise in clinical trials research, and the Department of Medical Statistics has a particular remit for methodological research, especially with regard to clinical trials.

Collectively the CTU and LSHTM have over 80 academic medical statisticians engaged in both applied and methodological research, a uniquely stimulating environment for this new appointment.

Interested applicants are encouraged to discuss the position further by contacting Mahesh Parmar, Director of the MRC Clinical Trials Unit and Director of CTU Hub for Trials Methodology Research ([log in to unmask]), and/or Stuart Pocock, Professor of Medical Statistics at LSHTM ([log in to unmask]).

To apply, please send a full CV with two referees and covering letter to Rachel Wilson, Resourcing Specialist: [log in to unmask], telephone 01793 867241. Please quote reference number IRC59195.

Closing date: 19th August 2012
Interview date: 20th, 26th September or 1st October 2012
