Almost certainly too late in the day for people to enjoy, but this is an interesting collection of 13 examples of how automatically-syndicated ad placement can sometimes get it very, very wrong:

Bridget (and others),

Culture24's advertising is now managed through this network which offers
more targeted and relevant adverts compared to the often rather odious
stuff that slipped through with our last supplier despite a clear
contract that said otherwise. They basically only channel you ads based
on your subject choice which for us is obviously culture. This means
theatre, comedy, film, music, books etc.
They work with smaller sites and blogs too and you *can* bring in a very
small steady income if you have good page impressions. But it's not
going to make anyone rich quick I am afraid.
Cheers Jane

Interesting. What did you use to try to persuade them? Are there any
examples of successful business sponsorship of websites? (zones? digital
collection items? games? an online event?) Are there any companies who
might be up for that (rather than traditional sponsorship?)
